Download · The Speaking Land Myth and Story in Aboriginal Australia µ PDF DOC TXT or eBook The Speaking Land Myth and Story in Aboriginal AustraliaI should be clear up front that I have not found any book comparable to this as a scholarly sourcebook of Aboriginal narrative traditions And it is to the credit of Berndt and Berndt that the stories in here are hard to read they are hard in the right ways the way that the interlinear texts you find in grammars of Australian languages are often hard to appreciate The people who told these stories thought about stories in a very different way from Euripides or the Brothers Grimm Having said that I wish there was scholarly apparatus that made these stories appreciable if not less mysterious The issue of polity in pre colonial Australia is fraught and the Berndts silently choose to identify the storytellers only by personal name and language group but this does the reader with comparative interests something of a disservice because it does not flag the ties of kinship ritual or even language that exist
